There’s something deeply cinematic about a cellist in portraiture. The discipline. The tension in the hands. The way music becomes physical long before a single note is heard. These portraits were never meant to be about performance alone. They were about presence.
Fine art portraiture is the deliberate act of deciding how you will be remembered — not as a title, a role, or the polished version of yourself built for public consumption, but as a living, evolving human being in a very specific chapter of your life. Not someone’s employee. Not someone’s parent. Not someone reduced to productivity or expectation. You.
When I photograph musicians, I’m not interested in creating a generic “artist portrait.” I want to document the atmosphere around them. The quiet between movements. The relationship between body and instrument. The years of repetition hidden beneath effortless expression. A cello is not just held — it’s inhabited.
These images became less about music and more about identity. About honoring the intensity, softness, discipline, and individuality that exist inside creative people long before an audience applauds them.
Portraiture like this matters because time moves fast. Faster than we realize while we’re inside it. One day, someone you love will search for evidence of who you truly were. Your grandchildren will want more than a phone snapshot or a filtered social media post. They’ll want something tangible. Honest. Something that carries your spirit back into the room.
Give them that.
Give them photographs that feel like memory before they ever become one.
