Holiday portraits should feel joyful, cozy, and magical… but the secret behind a beautiful final image actually begins long before I click the shutter. If you want those timeless Christmas pictures you’ve been dreaming of, here’s everything you need to know before stepping into the studio.

1. Wardrobe Matters—More Than You Think

Studio lighting is powerful and precise, but it also plays by its own rules. And this is where your wardrobe becomes extremely important.

Avoid Mixing Ultra Light + Ultra Dark Clothing

This is the #1 issue that makes editing more difficult.

• All black + all white in the same image = an editing battle

• Under off-camera flash, white becomes the brightest thing in the frame, and black absorbs all light

• When these extremes are mixed in one photo (for example: Dad in black, Mom in white, kids in opposite colors), it’s incredibly hard to balance exposure cleanly

For your final images to look polished and cohesive, choose coordinated mid-tone or richer tones:

• Deep greens

• Burgundy

• Creams

• Soft grays

• Navy

• Earthy holiday palettes

Skip Small Repeating Patterns, Logos & Textured Fabrics

These cause problems such as:

• Moiré patterns (that weird wavy distortion in photos)

• Harsh reflections

• Distracting textures or shadows

• Branding pulling attention away from your faces

Stick to solid colors, simple silhouettes, and clean lines.

2. Little Ones: What You Should Know

Holiday portraits with kids can be magical… as long as we stay realistic.

Children Must Be Able to Sit Unassisted for Solo Portraits

If your child isn’t sitting confidently yet, we’ll need to adjust expectations. Safety comes first, and I don’t use props or setups requiring support.

Happy Kids = Happy Photos

If your baby or toddler arrives cranky, overly tired, or overstimulated, they’re unlikely to offer smiles. And sadly:

I’m a photographer… not a child whisperer.
(If only, right?)

Please plan naps wisely, bring comfort items, and give your little one time to warm up.

3. My Studio Is Small—So No Shenanigans

I love kids, but the space is intentionally cozy.
Running, roughhousing, or exploring like it’s a playground simply isn’t possible (or safe).

To keep the session smooth:

• Please supervise your children closely

• Remind them that the studio equipment is not for playing

• Let them know this is a “special picture time,” not a free-for-all

A calm studio = better expressions, better posing, and better photos.
