Why Your “Marvel Multiverse” Portfolio Is Costing You Clients
Hey Charleston photographer-
Let’s just say it: if your social media portfolio looks like a “choose your own ending” comic book, clients aren’t confused—they’re gone.
One day you're posting moody fine art portraits.
The next day it's neon cosplay.
Then suddenly… a real-estate listing?
Your grid starts giving Marvel Universe vibes with 47 alternate realities—and none of them tell people what you actually do.
Here’s the hard truth:
Clients don’t book confusion.
If they can’t look at your page and instantly understand your style, your niche, and your level of expertise, they move on to someone whose portfolio feels consistent, intentional, and confident.
And yes—this includes those one-off jobs you do “just because the client asked” or “it was easy money.” Before you point any fingers back at me, yes I've done it too which is why I feel I have to mention it. At the very least, keep your public portfolio consistent... Posting work you don't truly vibe with will force you into being asked to do it again in the future. Let me expand....
Creating and posting work outside your niche doesn’t just dilute your brand—it sets a dangerous precedent:
You start producing subpar work just to earn a dollar.
And once you start doing that, clients will expect you to keep doing it. Suddenly your portfolio becomes a bargain bin of mismatched experiments instead of a gallery of what you’re truly great at.
If you want clients who value your artistry—and are willing to pay for it—you have to show them who you are.
Not 17 versions of who you could be.
Curate with intention.
Post with purpose.
And leave the multiverse to Marvel.
