Lowcountry Fall Photo Guide: Best Outfits & Free Public Locations

Capturing fall memories in the Lowcountry is a bit of a magic trick. While the rest of the country is seeing vibrant maples and crisp orange leaves, our "autumn" is a subtler shift: the marsh grass turns a stunning golden-bronze, the light gets softer (and less humid!), and the Spanish moss provides a timeless, silvery backdrop.

To help you prep for your session, here is a guide on what to wear and where to go to get those high-end results without the extra fees.

What to Wear: The Lowcountry Fall Palette

In the South, "Fall" is more of a feeling than a temperature. Since our scenery stays largely green (thanks to those live oaks), you want to avoid dressing in bright greens or teals that will blend into the background.

1. The "Golden Hour" Palette

Think of colors that complement the bronze marsh grass and grey moss.

Deep Jewel Tones:Navy, burgundy (merlot), and emerald green.

Warm Neutrals: Camel, oatmeal, and cream.

The "Pop" Factor: Mustard yellow or burnt orange work beautifully as accent colors in a scarf or a child’s sweater.

2. Texture Over Patterns

Instead of everyone wearing the same plaid shirt, aim for **coordinating textures**. This adds depth to your photos and looks more "Old Masters" than "ordered from a catalog."

Try: Chunky knits, suede boots, corduroy, or a velvet ribbon in a child’s hair.

Pattern Rule: If one person is wearing a pattern (like a soft floral or a subtle plaid), everyone else should stick to solids that pull colors from that pattern.

3. Layer for the "Lowcountry Swing"

It might be 55°F when you start and 68°F by the time the sun goes down. Layers—like cardigans, light blazers, or scarves—allow you to change your "look" mid-session without a full outfit change.

Free & Photo-Worthy: No Entry Fees, Free Parking

You don’t need to pay a plantation entrance fee to get that classic South Carolina look. Here are three spots that offer iconic backdrops for $0.

1. Hampton Park (Downtown Charleston)

This is the "crown jewel" of public parks in Charleston. It features massive live oaks with sweeping Spanish moss and winding pathways.

The Vibe:Classic, romantic, and spacious.

Parking: Free street parking along Cleveland Street or the parking lots within the park (just check for "no parking" signs during weekend events).

2. Pitt Street Bridge (Mount Pleasant)

For the family that wants the marsh and the water without the sand in their shoes, this is the spot.

The Vibe:Golden marsh grass at sunset and a long, narrow walkway that creates great leading lines for your photos.

Parking: Free street parking at the end of Pitt Street (Old Village). It’s a popular spot, so arrive 20 minutes early to snag a space.

3. White Point Garden & The Battery (Downtown Charleston)

If you want the historic "Holy City" look with white gazebos and wrought-iron fences, head to the tip of the peninsula.

The Vibe::Sophisticated and historic.

Parking::Free street parking is available along the seawall (The Battery) or on the side streets like Murray Blvd and South King. Most spots are limited to 2 hours, which is plenty for a portrait session.

••• Pro Tip for Your Session

Since our "fall" still has plenty of mosquitoes (especially near the marsh), don't forget to pack a travel-sized bug spray and some oil-blotting sheets. The Lowcountry glow is beautiful—but the Lowcountry sweat is real!
