As photographers, we’re naturally drawn to beautiful locations. Marrington Plantation is one of the most visually compelling settings in our area — historic ruins, moss-draped oaks, and that unmistakable Lowcountry atmosphere.
What makes it unique also makes it different from a public park.
Marrington is located within Joint Base Charleston Weapons Station. That means it is federal property under military jurisdiction, governed by installation-level policy.
And that distinction matters.
Access Is a Privilege — Not a Public Right
Recreational access and commercial activity are not the same thing.
On military installations, business activity — including photography conducted for compensation — may require authorization beyond standard access credentials. Policies are determined at the installation level and can involve coordination with Public Affairs, Force Support, or command approval depending on circumstances.
For those operating a business from base housing, Home-Based Business approval is typically required through the appropriate command structure, often coordinated through the 628th Force Support Squadron.
These policies aren’t about gatekeeping. They exist for:

Protection of installation access for everyone

Seeing professional sessions posted online does not indicate whether authorization was obtained. Every situation may differ based on sponsorship, permits, insurance, or client access.
